Lead Paint
As explained by the CDC, children being exposed to lead (be it by breathing it in, by swallowing it, or by touching it) can have long-term damaging effects on the brain, behavior, growth, and in senses such as hearing and speech.
In order to protect children, laws have been introduced in the US throughout the years to prohibit the use of lead-based paint. That is, both to forbid its use in new properties, as well as to change the paint of existing properties.
